Angkor Wat cycle

Day 1: Visiting Angkor Wat Temples north of Siem Reap

Cycle: 44.4 Kms ; 3:37:53; 12.2kph

I booked a tour instead with Cambodia Cycling from Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.  There was a mix of on and off road cycling, whereas on my own I would have done road only.  It was a good way of seeing more of the beautiful Cambodian countryside and villages.  And the tour company were very well organised and a nice group of fellow cyclists to ride with.  The bikes were good quality Giant mountain bikes.

First of 3 days based in the town of Siem Reap, visiting the temples that a spread all round the Siem Reap area. Siem Reap itself is a very pleasant relaxed place which is where everyone stays whilst visiting the temples. The main Angkor Wat site lies about 8 kms north of town which took up all of day 1.  Day 2 we went further north visiting Bantaey Srei.  Day 3 we visited the temples to the east of the town, known as the Roluos Group.  The temples are quite spread out over a large area, perfect for connecting them all by bicycle.

Someone commented that Siem Reap reminded them of Chang Mai in Northern Thailand, and I have to say I agree. A pleasant town with lots of good places to eat, good hotels and not busy compared to Phnom Penh or Bangkok. The only difference is that Chang Mai has 16 McDonalds restaurants (according to the big advertising sign at the edge of the town), whereas Siem Reap has to content itself with a KFC.
